Barometric Pressure

Air pressure refers to the weight of air pressing down on the Earth’s surface. Pressure is affected by the density of air, which depends heavily on temperature and elevation.

Air pressure is an important weather indicator. Areas of high pressure have mild, warm weather, while low pressure zones have stormy, cold weather. Scientists study barometric pressure as an indicator of seasonal current patterns, tidal fluctuations, and wind shifts. Some organisms respond to changes in barometric pressure.

Air pressure is measured using a barometer, thus air pressure is also commonly referred to as barometric pressure.
